John E. Morton
John E. Morton is Managing Director, Program Planning & Economic Policy at The Pew Charitable Trusts. His planning responsibilities involve guiding overall strategy design for key projects, assessing potential initiatives and monitoring the institution's programmatic portfolio. He also directs Pew's recently established Economic Policy unit, which is anchored by the Economic Mobility Project, a two-year initiative seeking to broaden the current national debate on income inequality to include a more substantive focus on economic mobility and opportunity. John has appeared on CNN, C-SPAN, and National Public Radio and has been interviewed by The New York Times, The Washington Post, The Wall Street Journal, The Los Angeles Times, The Economist, and countless other media outlets.
Prior to joining Pew, John served as Director of National Security Policy for the John Kerry Presidential campaign where he coordinated the development of campaign policy toward Afghanistan, Russia and the former Soviet states, Africa, and on issues relating to democracy, human rights and economic development. Previously, John was Investment Officer with Global Environment Fund, where he oversaw global investments in sustainable forestry and the natural gas sector and developed a clean energy practice. He also worked as a strategy consultant with Mercer Management Consulting and began his professional career at the World Bank, where he managed investments in the former Soviet Union.
John received an MBA from the Wharton School at the University of Pennsylvania and an MA in International Economics from the Johns Hopkins School for Advanced International Studies. He graduated from Harvard College with a BA in Russian History and Literature. Fluent in Russian and French, John serves on the board of the National Security Network. He lives in Washington D.C. with his wife and daughter.
