David A. Hollinger

David A. Hollinger has written extensively about the relations between ethnicity, religion, ideology, and politics in the history of the United States. His recent books include Cosmopolitanism and Solidarity (2006), Postethnic America: Beyond Multiculturalism (3rd edition, expanded, 2006), and an edited volume, The Humanities and the Dynamics of Inclusion (2006). His recent essays have appeared in Daedalus, London Review of Books, Representations, Modern Intellectual History, Journal of American Ethnic History, and Chronicle of Higher Education. He is the vice president of the Organization of American Historians, a trustee of the Institute for Advanced Study, and an elected fellow of the American Academy of Arts and Sciences. He was formerly Harmsworth Professor of American History at the University of Oxford and is now Preston Hotchkis Professor of American History at the University of California, Berkeley, where he recently served as chair of his department. He is currently studying the effect of the Protestant foreign missionary project on the history of the United States in the 20th century.
