April Carson
Deputy Director, Legal Progress
April Carson is the Deputy Director of Legal Progress at American Progress, where her work focuses on legal policy issues, including judicial nominations and constitutional interpretation.
April joined CAP after serving as legislative advisor and counsel at Alliance for Justice, where she provided legal guidance and advocacy training for grassroots advocates across the country. She has presented legal trainings for hundreds of nonprofits and foundations in 35 states and the District of Columbia.
Prior to her work at AFJ, April served as the U.S. European Command’s senate liaison. She was an adjunct faculty member of the University of Maryland’s University College and Central Texas College, where she taught undergraduate legal studies in Italy and Afghanistan. While in Afghanistan, April organized a humanitarian aid project that provided medical and school supplies to local Afghan children and clothing and medical items to women and children’s hospitals throughout the country. As a law student, she was selected as a 2001-2002 Albert Schweitzer Fellow. She spent her fellowship year advocating for the rights of domestic violence survivors within the North Carolina legal system.
April holds a J.D. from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill and a B.A. from American University. She was chosen as the UNC School of Law Pro-Bono Student of the Year in 2002 and received the Gressman-Pollit Award for Outstanding Oral Advocacy in 2000. She is a member of the Virginia State Bar.
