Research Assistant/Associate

Reports to: Director, American Worker Project

Position classification: Exempt, Full-Time

Summary

The Center for American Progress has an immediate opening for an Economic Research Assistant or Associate. The position is open to those with expertise or interest in economic policy, especially in the areas of labor market policies, retirement, and labor unions.

The position requires strong analytic and writing abilities, as well as an ability to effectively work with others in the economic team (and throughout the Center) to provide assistance in the production of original research papers, the coordination of outreach efforts, and the analysis of current and proposed policy.

Responsibilities include but are not limited to the following:

  • Support and conduct original research and analysis of economic policy issues
  • Research legislative issues as they pertain to economic policy issues
  • Proofread and edit documents
  • Assist in the coordination and planning of meetings and events
  • Draft articles, papers, charts, tables, and graphs of economic data
  • Prepare and analyze economic data sets
  • Maintain expertise in assigned areas of responsibility
  • Perform other duties as assigned

Requirements:

  • Strong analytical skills
  • Good writing and research skills
  • Ability to understand economic issues and to communicate them effectively
  • Ability to work well within a team in a fast-paced environment
  • Comfort working under pressure and tight deadlines
  • Ability to multi-task

Qualifications:

  • (For Research Assistant) Bachelor’s degree in economics, public policy, or related field and at least two years professional experience and/or advance degree required
  • (For Research Associate) Bachelor’s degree and at least three to four years of professional experience and/or an advanced degree in economics, public policy, or related field
  • Legislative experience a plus
  • Knowledge of politics
  • Non-profit, both 501 (c) (3) and 501 (c) (4) experience a plus
  • Advanced data/statistical analysis a plus
  • Familiarity with the issues of low-wage work and organized labor a plus
  • Commitment to Center’s mission and goals required
