External Affairs Internship

External Affairs amplifies the Center for American Progress’ policy voice by forging relationships with progressive groups, think tanks, scholars, community leaders, and elected officials at the federal, state, and local levels. The department raises awareness of the Center and its work, while connecting Center staff with progressive allies.

We are looking for students with interest in the following areas:

Government Affairs and Coalition Relations. The government affairs team advances CAP’s policies at the federal, state, and local levels. In addition to working with elected leaders and their staff, CAP strives to partner with other organizations advocating for progressive goals and priorities. Interns are needed for projects such as short web-based research assignments, contact management, tracking legislation, and staffing Hill briefings and events. Ideal candidates will have strong research and writing skills,as well as an interest in legislative processes.

Online Advocacy. The online advocacy team turns Action Fund policies and ideas into campaigns that enable constituents to reach out to government officials, corporations, and policymakers to influence the public debate. This team needs assistance with the creation and maintenance of communities of progressive activists using social networking websites. The intern will also assist in the research, development, and execution of email and web-based advocacy campaigns and outreach efforts. Ideal candidates will have a strong interest in the development of grassroots and netroots activism.

Constituent Relationship Management, Outreach Technologies, and Email Marketing. The CRM and strategic outreach team manages the development of CAP’s CRM system and related technologies. This team also handles much of CAP’s email marketing and dissemination. This team needs assistance with the email marketing portfolio, maintaining the Center’s contact database, and researching trends and best practices that can improve CAP’s outreach capabilities. Ideal candidates will have technical experience with CRM and email.
