Associate Director, Ocean Communications
Kristan Uhlenbrock is the Associate Director for Ocean Communications at American Progress. Her work focuses on driving communication and outreach to advance more sustainable and resilient oceans.
Prior to joining American Progress, Uhlenbrock was part of the public affairs team at the American Geophysical Union. While there, she worked to bridge the public policy environment with the scientific community, communicate the importance of science to our nation’s leaders, and train scientists on how to better communicate the importance of their work. Formerly, she worked at the Environmental Protection Agency in the oceans and coastal protection division and the White House Council on Environmental Quality to develop and advance the National Ocean Policy, Executive Order 13547.
Uhlenbrock received her M.S. in marine science from the University of South Florida College of Marine Science, studying nutrient distributions and their impacts on coastal estuarine systems, as well as their role in sustaining harmful algal blooms in the Gulf of Mexico. She also holds a B.S. in chemistry.
