Austan Goolsbee

Distinguished Senior Fellow

Austan D. Goolsbee is a Distinguished Senior Fellow at American Progress, where he studies the Internet, the new economy, government policy, and taxes.

He is currently the Robert P. Gwinn Professor of Economics at the University of Chicago Booth School of Business. He recently served as the chairman of the Council of Economic Advisers and a member of President Barack Obama’s cabinet. His research has earned him recognition as a Fulbright scholar and a Sloan fellow. He has also been named one of the “Global Leaders for Tomorrow” by the World Economic Forum, one of the six “Gurus of the Future” by the Financial Times, and one of the “40 under 40″ by Crain’s Chicago BusinessHis ability to explain economics clearly has made Goolsbee popular in the media. Jon Stewart describes him as “Eliot Ness meets Milton Friedman.”

Goolsbee also spent time as a special consultant for internet policy for the Antitrust Division of the Department of Justice and was the lead editor of the Journal of Law and Economics for several years.
