American Progress is looking for a talented Web Developer to create platforms and tools that advance progressive causes. The Web Technology team is a small shop running a large portfolio of sites, including a few heavyweights such as americanprogress.org and thinkprogress.org. The team leverages technologies, such as WordPress and Amazon Web Services, or AWS, to move quickly with tight deadlines and a lot of competing priorities.
The Web Technology team helps policy teams and journalists create awesome content; the ideal candidate needs to be great with code, design, and users. The Web Developer will be involved with every aspect of putting content on the Internet, from the server infrastructure all the way up the web stack to the user’s browser. American Progress sites are fluid and responsively designed to work on both desktop and mobile and also integrate with CRM platforms such as Salesforce and Eloqua.
On this team, employees have the chance to grow their skill sets, as well as contribute their ideas. Candidates need to be comfortable working independently, communicating one-on-one with users, and making architectural choices that support maintainability and scalability. American Progress wants a developer who can both learn and teach.
- Write beautiful, well-documented code.
- Gather requirements from users and stakeholders.
- Mentor other developers through code reviews and discussions on best practices.
- Participate in planning and strategy sessions.
- Code deploys, testing, and server upkeep.
- Perform other duties as assigned.
Requirements and qualifications:
Bachelor’s degree or equivalent experience in the field is required.
Candidates’ toolbox should include:
- Git or a similar version control system
- HTML5, CSS3, and web typography
Candidates should have a minimum of three to five years experience with:
- WordPress plug-in and theme development
- Fluid and responsive web design for desktop, mobile, and tablet devices
- Content-delivery optimization techniques
And it would not hurt to know about workflow tools such as:
- Agile software development
- Bug trackers and ticket management
- Cloud technology such as AWS
- Unit testing
