Summary

The Development department at American Progress works to ensure the long-term stability of the organization. The Development team maintains relationships with members of the progressive philanthropic community; coordinates the work of American Progress’s various departments with the organization’s long-term goals; and furthers American Progress’s mission through communication, coordination, and financial outreach. Responsibilities for Development interns may include managing American Progress’s donor database, staying updated on the activities of the organization’s various policy teams, researching activities of the progressive philanthropic community and infrastructure, researching and learning about potential donors, assisting with events and fundraisers, and other duties as assigned.

The work of the Development team requires constant communication with all departments, and interns will be exposed to people and work being done across American Progress. Interns may also have the opportunity to write for various purposes and are encouraged to be open about their specific interests. Due to the small size of the department, interns work closely with staff and can help shape various projects.

Every internship includes an important core of administrative work, including database management, report distribution, and general office support. Other duties include conducting targeted research and reporting on policy meetings, seminars, hearings, and lectures. Whenever possible, interns are encouraged to write on the subject of their choice either as a contributor to a larger final piece or as an individual author of a column for our website.

American Progress operates two separate nonprofit organizations to maximize our progressive agenda: The Center for American Progress and the Center for American Progress Action Fund. This job posting refers collectively to the two organizations under the name “American Progress.” The Center for American Progress is a non-partisan 501(c)(3) tax-exempt research and educational institute. It undertakes research, public education and a limited amount of lobbying. The Center for American Progress Action Fund is a non-partisan 501(c)(4) tax-exempt organization dedicated to achieving progress through action. It works to transform progressive ideas into policy through rapid response communications, legislative action, grassroots organizing, political advocacy, and partnerships with other progressive leaders. The organizations share office space and employees.

American Progress is an equal opportunity employer; women, minorities, and people with disabilities are encouraged to apply.
